Das Elephant 1948 OR kann ich nur empfehlen. Mein absoluter Favorit bisher. Gerade für verhaltene Nasen ideal. Funktioniert auch super bei kleinen Mengen. 1cl sind kein Problem. Für nen DOK oder ähnliches würde ich allerdings Copita oder Glencairn bevorzugen. Sonst bläst einem zu viel Ester entgegen.
Mit dem Glas hab ich auch schon Gunnar, Christian, Sebastian, Johannes und Lance (The Lone Caner) überzeugt.
Rein von der Form ist es ja sehr ähnlich zum Samaroli. Bisschen höher, bisschen kleinerer Öffnungsdurchmesser, aber gleicher Bauch. Nur der “internal step” ist alleinstehend beim Samaroli. Der Vergleich würde mich schon interessieren.
Leider nein, hatte beim erstem Mal über Machlo im Zuge einer Samplebestellung Gläser mitbestellt und fand die so gut dass ich nochmal mit einer Sammelbestellung in Polen nachgelegt habe.
If you want cheaper one then rum set glass from Riedel is basically the same shape and dimensions with shorter stem (and probably lower glass quality):
Yesterday I tested this rum glass with Appleton 2002 and this glass presented very nice, intense and balanced nose. Very pleasurable experience. One downside is that you need to pour at least 30 ml and preferably 45 ml to reach maximum liquid surface in the glass. I need more tests with other rums and spirits.
When it comes to Elephant it’s really great if you want to have a deep evaluation of the spirit even with very small quantities, but it’s not very convenient to use it as you shouldn’t tilt the glass - it should remain in vertical position while nosing. It’s also quite fast - aromas evolution is very fast and you should keep focus constantly, usually whole development takes 15-30 minutes and then it’s done.
Copita is also nice, because it focuses aromas very effectively and it’s a powerful tool, but you need to be careful how you operate it to get most from the spirit and not burn your nose. I also noticed that aromas while stronger are not separated as much as in Riedel Cognac.
For me for more casual drinking Riedel Rum, Riedel Cognac and wee glencairn are a way to go, depending from how much I want to dring - smaller pours below 20 ml → wee glencarin above 25 ml → Riedels.
To sum up, my shortlist of glasses that I’ll use now:
The Professional (similar to the 1920’s blenders glass, but sturdier and heavier, which I like). When the aromas come across as really pungent, I have to lift my nose, or use
The Glencairn Copita
I have ordered the Riedel Rum Set (4x) so see how this could differ.
Still this is not always optimal, so I am hoping that the Samaroli glass will be of help
heute musste sich das Samaroli gegen das 1920s Blender‘s glass behaupten, mit zwei Referenzrums, dem Flens JMC 2007 und dem Velier Caroni 17…natürlich alles zu rein wissenschaftlichen Zwecken
Beim Flens ist das Blender‘s glass deutlich intensiver, aber der hohe ABV dafür auch stechender. Mit dem größeren Volumen beim Samaroli wirkt alles etwas harmonischer. Ob der ‚internal step’ tatsächlich dazu beiträgt, die Alkoholmoleküle zu brechen, wie behauptet, kann ich nicht wirklich beurteilen (ich würde es aber eher der Marketing-Ecke zuordnen). Beim Caroni fand ich die Unterschiede dagegen nicht sonderlich ausgeprägt. Was mir hier aber auch noch auffiel: das Samaroli braucht generell mehr Inhalt, um in Fahrt zu kommen. Es muss über den unteren Teil hinaus befüllt sein.
Fazit: Das Blender‘s bleibt weiterhin mein Favorit für Tastings, zum entspannten Sippen ist das Samaroli aber eine gute Wahl.
beim Blender‘s reichen mir meistens schon 1cl. Ich kenne kein anderes Glas das mit so einer Menge so viel rausholen kann. Es ist aber (wie beim Flens mit hohem ABV ) auch oft echt ‚anstrengend‘
Kann mich da nur anschließen, bei hohem ABV oder viel Ester ist mir das blenders Glas auch zu anstrengend. Das Samaroli Glas ist eher zum gemütlichen sippen.
@Thunderbird und ich haben beim Öffnen und Probieren des RX13128 mal diese beiden Gläser (Elephant) 1920 Blender’s und gedrehtes Riffelglas nebeneinander probiert und waren sehr überrascht: das Glas von Olaf Tappert überzeugt sehr durch die weitere Öffnung und das durchaus geringe, notwendige Volumen im Glaskörper. Klare Kaufempfehlung! Beim Blender’s (Elephant) kamen die Aromen zu komprimiert und stechend konzentriert an der Nase an, das Riffelglas hatte da mehr Raum und der Rum konnte sich besser öffnen.
