Hi Everyone,
I open this topic as I’m quite intrigued by the distinct profile of the Last Ward bottlings. I tried both the Last Ward 2009 from Habitation Velier (RX582) and the Last Ward 2007 from Velier (RX17320) and they have a character that I didn’t find in any other Mount Gay bottling. I mean specifically the glue/metallic profile that, to me, makes it more interesting than most MG or Foursquare rums.
I asked Mount Gay representatives about it, and they told me that since the ‘Last Ward era’ nothing has changed in their crafting method. So it seems that the Last Ward bottlings are rather the product of specific casks selection, with higher ABV and longer aging than regular Mount Gay range.
Has anyone more info on the topic ?

This article states, that the Last Ward is not conparable to either Mount Gay nor Foursquare because it is the remaining stock of Mount Gilboa rum, the brain child of Frank Ward. According to the article that was triple distilled pure pot still rum. That would explain the difference in profile.
The OG stuff would be this:

Thanks for sharing! So I guess people I have talked to might have played with the confusion between Mount Gay and Mount Gilboa.
That said, I wonder what else might have been different beside the triple distillation. I assume the stills haven’t changed, but the craft might have. Hopefully, some notes have been left and we may one day see it come back under one form or another.

Yeah, easy to see where that comes from.
It’s not only triple distillation, it’s the 100% pot still vs. pot+column blend. Not sure if that wasn’t clear enough or if it was just an omission in that sentence.
