Dafür wird wohl auf Barbados schlicht viel zu wenig davon produziert als das realistisch wäre daher stellt sowas wie die Mount Gay Abfüllung auch eher eine Ausnahme von der Regel da und kostet zudem auch mehr was es gerade für die Produktion von günstigen Standardprodukten nicht allzu attraktiv macht. Das Problem haben ja auch andere Staaten Stichwort Entwicklung der weltweiten Zuckerproduktion.

Now that the Barbados GI is gone, I’d like to get back to Caroni for a moment. Now, I understand why bottlers release anything these days, including discarded dishwashing liquid, as long as they can legally label it as “Caroni”. What I don’t understand is why people keep buying the '97-'98 releases for these prices (eg 350 € for 0.5l). FOMO or not, there are reviews, there is knowledge, and let’s face it: even if you hit the jackpot with the best, most delicate floral Caroni (which I believe most 98s are) it’s still just above an OK rum. Not to mention that really decent Caroni can still be had for similar/tiny bit more on the secondary market.
tl;dr: why do people keep bying the 97 and 98 vintages when at best it’s going to be “ok”?

Taste is personal preference, plus quantity is objectively limited. I have a Bristol 97 and a Kill Devil 98 and they are among my favorites — I prefer them over some of the Velier bottlings.
In fact, considering todays market, I find the value to be equal or even above — I’m rather spending on those than eg the new NRJ Stc<3e, Savanna 500ml single casks etc.

I never said any and all Velier bottlings are better just that some bottles available around those prices (or even lower, considering 0.5l vs 0.7l) are going to be better quality. In rum-x the highest rated 98’er is 9.0, same is also true for the 1997s. Of course one could argue that we had more than enough 1996s for 3 lifetimes and that taste is indeed very personal - I somehow still doubt most purchasers are making any kind of informed decision before swiping their cards.
