It is amazing story! Thank you for sharing!
the record did not hold that long ![]()
But I have to say, that I am somewhat sceptical about all those super old bottles without further objective evidence
I recall that for a pre-phylloxera cognac, Cognac Expert made some cesium and carbon-14 testing to assure its age (not sure if this works for rum, as well)
Jamaica 1760 here…
I bought 2 full bottles and one bottle with just 10cls rum remaining. All of them rebottled in 1935 and heavily sealed with wax.
(Un)Fortunately the seal of the bottle with 10cls get broken in the final stage of personal delivery. The seal get broken when the courier brought the bottle to my office. The rum get spread in the light paper covering the bottle. And just according to the smell everyone in the room know, that it is not fake nor bad quality rum.
Just immagine the intensity of DOK rum with profile of Guyana. Amazing. Incredible. 100 points out of 100 according to smell.
The color is incredible. You can see on the photos - dark red-brown is the color of rum that everyone loves. Again top of the top.
The taste is heavily complex. So many tastes together hardy to differenciate each from the other, but full body. Nose feel wood and little bit smoke and brown dried fruit with prunes. There is no alcohol nor esthers in nose. The taste follow the nose, but add a lot of more. The wood is there, not extra strong but significant. Smoke disappeared. And then come taste of apple cake that made my grandma but without cinamon. Add Plums, prunes, brown dried mild fruit, fiqs, mango. Mild leather, mild wood, mocca. Little bit sweet taste, definitely without sugar. You do not feel the strong of alcohol, instead you feel the taste of calmed esthers.
The negative point is for me just one - it is so complex and integrated, that I have problem to recognize all the taste. And the body is not so full like Cadenheads/Velier 1980’s rums. A lot of the taste transfered in the air and refreshed the air in the room.
According to the taste, the most similar is High Spirit Port Mourant from 1974 - for about 85%. Anyway - J1760 is more intense and fullbody compared to HS1974. Its amazing that 200y older rum can be more intensive.
Or it could be compared to the original Tot from 1965 - for about 80%. Or - you probably know AE 40y - 70% similarity.
The rum was perfecty preserved in the bottle. And the owner in 1935 knew well why he sealed the bottles for future generations. This is the only reason why I want to be slave in sugar cane plantation in Jamaica in 1760.
So 2 full bottles with intacted content left.
Last drops of the rum was passed to laboratory for age and spectrography tests.
According to the bottle history -
3 bottles of very old Jamaican rum from 1760. Slightly low level. Green-tinted glass bottle with handwritten label “Rhum 1760 Jamaïque” and illegible label remnants - “mis en …”, “Rebouché le 3 Août 1935”.
Height of the bottle - 29.8 cm
Provenance: Emile Martignole in Barcelona, then by descent tohis grand-daughter. And now to me.
Note: Since 1849, Emile Martignole (older), a Frenchman, had been established at 10 Escudillers in Barcelona under the sign “Tienda del Colmado”, where he traded in wines and spirits, importing in particular wines from Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux. He made a name for himself with his “meat and chicken jelly”, a house specialty praised for its dietary virtues.
In 1922, Emile Martignole set up shop on the chic Paseo de Gracia, no. 43, on the first floor of the Casa Batlló, a modernist building designed by architect Antoni Gaudí in the early years of the 20th century. He would remain there until the years preceding the Civil War.
According to family tradition, this bottle of rum comes from a batch of very old Jamaican rum, dated 1760, which Emile Martignole and his son Emilio had bought at a World’s Fair, perhaps the Paris Exhibition of 1878 or 1900.

To me that bottle looks exactly like what some faker would produce and pass as “super old rum” ![]()
Edit: The bottles from Pavel look way more credible.
Thats true that Lucas bottle looks like home made fake ![]()
Anyway - I know where and how did Luca boys found the bottle. And the story says it is not fake.
I am also happy that I get 2 bottles + one with remainings of the rum. Because - I can test what is inside and none would fake two and half bottle. That Rudy Kurniawan must be supersmart ![]()
BTW - the shape of my bottles says that they are not original form 1760. But from the beggining of 20th century. Anyway it is also written on them that the rum was rebottled.
I also have few rums from 1860 in original bottles. They are waiting for the right moment!
