Hier sind ja vor einiger Zeit ein paar Splits durch gegangen. Also falls (noch) jemand ein paar Samples diverser Calvados abgeben mag, darf sie oder er sich sehr gern bei mir melden - würde mich da freuen.

Who is the winner?

I did a cross tasting of Malternatives calvados samples (last drops) from 1987 and 1964. The 1987 is a clear winner. The nose is unusual and fantastic, and on the palate it’s so dark (leather and chocolate), nutty, balsamic. Sherry barrel influence is clearly present, so this is something that sherry whisky / armagnac / cognac Daniel Bouju admirers will love. If you’re looking for a classic calvados, this is maybe not for you. 1964 is great as well, but it-s not that interesting. Needs some time to open.

Der Gewinner war hier relativ klar..der Swell liegt hier weit vorne… der ist so herrlich intensiv nach altem Apfelkompott, gepaart mit leichtem Lederaroma, sowie edlem Holz.
Ich persönlich bin kein großer Freund von Finish. Gerade die Sherrys find ich sehr schwierig, da sie oft zu dominant sind und das Grundprodukt überlagern

In a lot of situations, distillers or bottlers use the finish when they have a mediocre spirit after x years of maturation. So I don’t like finishes neither, unless it is an Edradour 1999 with a 15y finish in Oloroso Sherry casks lol.

But in this case, the sherry cask is not a finish. From the available info, Noix Surprise spent all its’s life in the oloroso sherry barrel. A great success for me, but I understand why some people who prefer typical calvados are not cray about it. Recently I’ve finished a bottle of Papalin Haiti ex-sherry cask, so obviously this is something in my ally.

I am sorry that I did’t purchase Christian Drouin 1964. It is liquid history and really a great Calvados (but please note that I prefer spirits with stronger barrel influence). Still the price is unrealistic.
