Struggling with Barbados rums

Hello everyone
I don’t want to bother you, but I could use your help. I often see people here talking about rums they really enjoy. Personally, I like rums from Jamaica, Trinidad, and Guyana — those are my favorites.

The problem comes with rums from Barbados, for example Foursquare. I have quite a lot of samples and bottles, but I just don’t enjoy them. For me, the issue is that I often notice the alcohol quite strongly, and the finish feels rather short. It’s not that these are bad rums in terms of flavor, but so far they just haven’t really convinced or impressed me.

Is there any way to “learn” to like these rums, or am I a “hopeless case”?

Do you also have any rums or distilleries that you don’t like? If so, do you keep trying more samples, or do you simply avoid them?

Thanks a lot for your answers and advice :tumbler_glass:

I find it pretty cool that you don’t like it. If we were all liking the same rums always, that would be so boring.
Personnaly I don’t like most of caroni’s I’ve tasted and I would trade one of these bottles for a good clarendon 95 or a good enmore 94 without any hesitation! … if I had some :winking_face_with_tongue:
So you’re not an hopeless case, just someone who have his own taste! Keep it!

Bravo, there is not much more to add what Rodolphe wrote!
The only thing I would recommend is to give Foursquare rum a try every now and then. As our taste usually evolves there might be a chance you like Foursquare rum a litte more in the future
Or to just confirm that your taste has not changed regarding Foursquare.

Where’s the problem? If you don’t like it that much AND still are trying samples to see if your taste develops then you’re already doing a much greater job for your taste buds than 80% of sheeps who eat and drink the same the rest of their life’s!
I don’t see any issue with not liking Foursquare. If you don’t like it it’s not for you and that is okay. Would be strange and getting boring quickly if we would all like the same stuff as Rodolphe and RumTaTa already said.:grin::100::clap:t3:

I usually add water to the high-proof Foursquare rums, like 1-2 table spoons, to taste. For me, this makes them way smoother and really opens them up.

I also find most Barbados Rums pretty boring and with a sharp ending. That goes for Wird, Last Ward and Mount Gay. Foursquare has some nice expressions but i can fully understand when people dont go crazy for them. But they made some nice cask work with the Velier expressions, so its worth to check a sample here and there and keep you palate up to date.

Since there is a big variety in rum, you dont need to follow all trends or taste varieties. Im also sceptical for most trends outside of the classical paths (Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Barbados, AOC Agricole), even though you sometimes find some nice expressions. To name a few underwhelming niche directions: Mauritius, Ghana, Japan, Seychelles, Australia. But its ok for me, there is still so much else to try and taste. Keep yourself open, but dont follow all trends.
