Let me get the full picture. I always was a Foursquare man, ever since I started my rum career a couple of years ago. My first “high priced” bottle (30€ +) was a Doorlys XO, than Doorlys 14. A year later an ECS 2011.
But it became common and equalised. It was ranked according to the running order. Despite Fidelitas, I had all of those already in the past, and this is what I wanted to find out and test on myself: is it FOMO? Is it worth to pay 215€ retail price, 1,000€ + on auctions?
Short: no.
Long: no, but because of reasons.
I’m having a second test tonight with Equidem, Fidelitas and Absolutio.
Fidelitas is far too soft and not enough booom on the tongue and palate, too close to Equidem, In addition to that I taste the second time on the sides of my tongue, a sharp, sweet metallic note, on the inside of my cheeks. Absolutio - bang, motherfucker! This is the real stuff! Velier, 200€ + , worth every penny. Magisterium? If you get it for 120 - 130€ - fine. Fidelitas? FOMO imho. Equidem? Bargain stuff, grab 2-3 bottles for the shelf if you get some < 100€, awesome price-performance ratio and far above Richard Steale Standard
Thanks for your extensive feedback. As I didn’t had a side by side comparison/tasting (yet).
I couldn’t agree with you more. One of my first “serious” rums was the Doorly 14. Still unbeatable to price-quality and my regular go to. I like it even more than some ECS, which are all nice cask/wood variations on itself.
Luckily the market cooled somewhat and you can find most at retail prices with a little bit of hunting. Even the Velier Absolutio at 200€. Fidelitas prices are crazy… I got lucky, found one at retail in a smaller Italian shop so I couldn’t resist to take it. I would really like the Destino, but the “cheapest” I could ever find was at 700€. Not willing to pay that, let alone the 70th anniversary edition ![]()
I’ll take your advice and grab some extra bottles of Equidem now that they still are widely available ![]()
One out, a new one comes in
Really liked the Elysium but the Equidem is something else, made me get the Absolutio to compare
Absolutio is still better for me but it’s really nitpicking
For half the price, the Equidem is an absolute banger that I can only recommend
The Destino & Destino 70th Anniversary is the same rum, only the packaging and was limited to 500 bottles
Was in einem Blind Test bald geschieht ![]()
Are you sure? Here it says:
This bottling is the result of the assembly of two ex-sherry barrels distilled in 2003, the oldest in stock at the Foursquare, and is bottled a barrel proof in Barbados.
So while probably very similar, it’s not “same same” with the Anniversary Edition beeing a vatting of only 2 (presumably the best?) casks and the regular Destino should then be a vatting of 10-11 different casks. Paying that premium for a colorful label would be even sillier, otherwise (yeah I know, stranger things have happened).
This week end, almost full Famille Ricci lineup in the east of France,
With @Jacquesetdom @kargoles & friends.
You’re probably right. Pretty unclear to me… Since all the barrels aged together the variations would be small I guess. I’d say a blind side by side tasting to test ![]()
Found an interesting article on the matter
