🔨 RumX Auction Radar

:hammer: RumX Auction Radar

On the closing evening of a partner auction, a post appears here with at most five lots whose current bid is below the average of earlier auction results for the same bottle. If too few lots qualify, there is no post.

RumX is paid by the auction houses per listed lot, regardless of bid and hammer price. Which lots appear is determined by fixed rules and no house. A recommendation to bid is it nonetheless not.

Three Things Before You Bid

  • Bids rise until the close. The post shows when they were checked. What stands here 40% below average can end up above it.
  • The gap is a reference point, not a saving. The bid is without buyer’s premium, shipping and customs — depending on the house, double-digit percentages are added. Bottle size, condition, vintage and the fee basis of earlier results may differ from the comparison.
  • Bidding happens at the auction house, on its terms. RumX is the overview, not the organizer.

How Selection Works

Automatically and the same for all houses, only on closing evening and only for the largest closing of the day from 50 ending lots. A lot must

  • have at least 7.5/10 from at least five ratings,
  • have at least five earlier auction results for the same RXID,
  • and be at least 10% and €30 below this average.

A gap from 30% forms the upper class and runs before each lot under 30%. Within each class count together: the gap in percent and in euros, at how few RumX shops the bottle is otherwise available, the wish lists and the number of earlier results. Per distiller, at most two lots go into the post, insofar as the distiller information permits.

What You Can Do

  • Wrong lot, wrong price, wrong closing time? Reply with the RXID, we correct it.
  • All running auctions you can find in the app under Shopping, including lots from your wish list.

Cool feature! Is it working correctly for all members regardless of status or RumX Plus?

I think that is going to ruin the auctions for any buyer looking to make a good deal on lots that lacked attention.
Now everybody will bid on them and raise the price, with no good deals to be made. This is only good for the sellers.

It was requested by so many users in the office hours, so I got straight to work on it. I’m still in the process of building it and want to gather some feedback first. But it could definitely become an RX+ feature here in the forum.

As a bargain hunter, I’m not particularly excited about it either, because I also think you’ll get less rum at good prices that way. But I’ll let myself be surprised. For “lazy people,” this is obviously a great feature :hugs:

I get you…

On the other hand you could say that posting and sharing low prices is one big part of the foundation of this board. Posting cheap Bottles in shops or eBay is what we called community work so far. I am absolutely one of the lazy person who needs that anf isnvery thankfuf for that.

The different part is that this is not community work but a RumX Feature and that RumX get’s paid for it.

But finding low prices here was always a main compoment.

But yes… It closes a gap. No rum sale without RumX in a few years . Not a bad think for us lazy people :face_savoring_food::victory_hand:.

Yeah, I was also thinking more of the silent lurkers here. My bargains benefit most of the users here anyway. And I mean it all with a smile, you know. It’s all good, Oli has to make a living too :hugs:

But I do think that makes a difference. Cheap bottles in stores and on eBay (at least with instant purchase), the price stays the same there, and the bargain remains one as long as there’s stock (or on Amazon until the algorithm changes the price  ).

With auction houses (yes, eBay too when it’s an auction), the supposed bargain quickly becomes one no longer…

That is true. It could become the critical moment of some auctions.

At the current level of transparency with prices we all have to decide more quickly than ever If we want a bottle and what we want to pay. Would be sad of course if the prices climb to much.

I got your point but I am a little bit sceptical if this feature will have such a huge impact.

from my experience in the last auctions its is getting more and more crowded anyway so it’s just accelerating something which is happening and in the end the people also need the financial resources to make alle the deals.

When the auctions got listed in the app, the hammer-prices raised signifcantly in my opinion.
And I think, the new feature will raise the prices to a higher level, too.
So I bet, there won’t be any more bargains at rum auctions in the future.

I am with you, this is where your personal effort to scroll through the lists, make bookmarks, follow the auction night…could suddenly dissolve into a worthless effort.

On the contrary, it could lead to artificially inflated prices. I have to say that I am not excited about this feature how it is designed currently - sorry for not being mor constructive here

In that case, I’d rather stick to auctions that aren’t featured here

So you mean it could inflate the value of the auction app?
I suppose you are right, but the value would nevertheless inflate as It’s becoming a commodity in times of KI-agents.
So its better Oli buids public KI-agents for RumX and all interested people can profit of it than if several smart guys build their KI-agents and only they can profit of it.

Its a commodization for all of the interested crowd at RumX, not only for the smart IT-Guys.

In my opinion, this is purely about rums fetching higher prices at auctions. The only way we can counter this is if we coordinate and don’t bid each other up. My goal is to split a rum at as low a price as possible. I think that’s just as legitimate as the other way around. Everyone just has to use the options available to them.

I guess, it depends on how you define the community. As I understood, it will be posted here in the public area. So no active imvolvement in any form for the community needed (not even registration as user required) to access the ‚bargains‘.

On your general point on AI, I agree, it is a trend that cannot be reversed. In finance, algorithmic trading has been established for many years. With AI agents, it becomes available for anyone and almost any possible product / service imaginable.

Thanks for the open feedback. Especially the critical kind. :folded_hands:

I can understand both sides well. The radar saves time, and at the same time the chance of that “really great deal” decreases. @ander_s described the difference to the shop offering precisely.

But that’s already relative today. Many of you are already using the existing auction house integration to check the ongoing lots from a RumX perspective and fill your wishlists. The radar is a pointer to a handful of lots, not a replacement for this work. It was built deliberately for a compact target group, nerds and enthusiasts. For most users, classic shop browsing remains the relevant thing.

Open for context: The collaboration with the auction houses finances a significant part of the ongoing development and keeps the core features free for everyone. That’s not a given. Server costs are now considerable, not even counting my working time, and many of you aren’t yet buying regularly through RumX.

Two adjustments before launch:

  • The radar moves into an area for registered members from Trust Level 1 onwards. @mto75, you’re absolutely right with your point.
  • Only lots that are already on a significant number of wishlists will appear.

@AlSting Your point hits home for me in one respect: RumX has the historical auction prices, and it makes a difference whether everyone has access to them or only those who build something like this themselves. That everyone comes out ahead in the end, I can’t promise with that.

Outlook: In the app, for each bottle on your wishlist in a future update, you’ll be able to choose whether you want to be notified not only when it’s available in the shop, but also when it appears in an auction.

The model is a work in progress and will take shape over the coming months with your feedback. I’ll look at what actually happens with the lots shown and report back with numbers.

Now better in English:
Personally, I’d rather expect bargain prices from the Deals & Discount thread (I’m just thinking of @Kaktus_kontrafaktus discovery of multi-discounts at delicando, but also currently of Neisson Blanc for €21) than from auctions, but maybe I’m just shopping in too cheap categories anyway.
As long as Oli puts the tool behind the RumX+ paywall after it’s developed, I’m out anyway.
But the critics can be happy that purely passive users, who probably won’t pay for RumX+ either, won’t benefit from it either…

If the auction platforms become more information-efficient this way, it could motivate more sellers to list their offers and prices could drop again thanks to increasing supply. (I wouldn’t bet on the value of collusion, though.)

And for me it remains: AI-automated scraping of such auction platforms will progress, one way or another. So it’s better if it gets scraped here for all interested rum friends than if multiple IT experts scrape the data privately and derive their little private advantages from it. Plus, this can then also become the appropriate forum to exchange information about fraudulent sellers and such.

For sellers and consequently probably also for the range of offers, it should become an advantage.

Auctions are already about different bottles than the ones that kontrafaktus finds. These bottles we’re talking about here you usually won’t find in any shop anymore. And I don’t know if I need an AI tool for the auctions now. Everyone has their own opinion on that, every opinion is legitimate. It just makes the search for “bargains” more exciting for me and opens new doors for me. And it keeps pushing me further towards Armagnac :hugs:
