Just one question - what is the formula for rum rating?
Sometimes there are 10 people that rated the rum. My rating is 11th. And sometimes my rating has huge impact on total rating and sometimes is has zero impact. Why?
How is the total rum rating counted? Is the rating refreshed online, or…?
Your ratings have huge impact not just on average rating ![]()
Jokes aside, I appreciate your ratings as very interesting and different/out of ordinary.
And also, I would like to know what is the formula. My idea was that the highest and lowest ratings are excluded from the equation, in order to get rid of biased people. And I don’t know if the rating itself (without the description) plays differently.
The overall rating of a rum on RumX is not based on the average, but on the median of all community ratings. This means:
- Outliers are automatically ignored – regardless of whether someone gives 1.0 or 10.0 points.
- The median is significantly more robust than the average and protects the rating from extremely high or low individual opinions.
- Only when at least 4 ratings from community members are available is an overall rating displayed.
This also explains why your rating sometimes has a strong impact (e.g., if you are the fourth person to submit a rating and the median shifts) and sometimes has no impact (if there are already many ratings and your value is in the “middle range”).
