I got this advice to use Creme De Noyaux instead of orgeat in Mai Tai from a bartender at Stagger Lee in Berlin. Add little bit of simple syrup for a balance. Its drier, bolder, but deeper and richer than Mai Tai with Orgeat. I can recommend to give it this version a go

RX19143 and RX10641

Solid blend but I can’t get warm with (this) DOK in a Mai Tai.

It’s a bit too much

I went for a very potent high ester one tonight. Equal parts DOK and HGML. Delicious and the rum does not get lost in the mix at all.

10.99 at Conalco was the cheapest price I found.
Meanwhile it’s 11.99 there now and doesn’t even have a picture anymore

Looking for a budget-friendly Mai Tai.
Basically quite okay, but so far I’d rather spend a bit more

So far I like the combination of all three best

Bit late to the party, but my budget Mai Tai rum blends are usually 50/50 of something quite funky and a higher proof “demera” like OFTD or pussers gunpowder proof.

The other budget friendly one i really like is Kevin Crossman’s Ultimate Mai Tai blend. Yes, that’s what he called it. 25ml each of Smith & Cross, OFTD, Appleton 12, and Planteray Xaymaca.

The combo with the Gunpowder or OFTD sounds interesting, but I think in general I’d rather spend a bit more.
I find the RX23494 so much better than my low budget attempts, for example
And I also prefer the liber and co much more than the meneau..

That’s fair. I’m quite partial to RX11980 myself.

Orgeat can be made at home from supermarket ingredients, and freezes well. It’s sugar, almond milk, salt, orange blossom water, rose water, almond extract.

Actually, let me write out my recipe here anyways.

Orgeat (~550ml, ~€1.40 in ingredients):

  • 250g high quality almond milk
  • 500g sugar
  • 2.5ml almond extract
  • 2.5ml rose water
  • 5ml orange blossom water
  • good pinch of fine salt

Dissolve sugar and salt into almond milk on low heat (do not boil), let cool down, add remaining ingredients. Shelf life in fridge is 2 months, but you can freeze it for way longer.
