I’m Jeen, I’m living in Thailand. I’ve gotten more and into rums over the past decade or so, moving from whisky. I’ve been lucky to drink a wide range of rums and I don’t think I have a favourite style. But there are some bottles that I’ll never forget.
My favourite bottle of all time is probably a New Yarnmouth 1994 that was bottled for Malt Grain and Cane (bamboo label). At 67.9%, I think it’s the perfect example of the pinnacle of Jamaican rum.
I’ve also been able to try a few releases of Havana Club Tributo and Maximo that made me change how I look at the big brands. Amazing stuff at 40% that I struggle to understand how they can pack so much into a middling proof.
I have a little distillery in Chiang Mai, Thailand called Choend Doi Distillery. Among other things we make a series of single estate rhums from fresh cane grown in Northern Thailand. We also have some experiments that we do for our own curiosity.
If anyone is in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, I’m always looking for an excuse to get the glasses out and try new spirits with friends.
My ex-girlfriend lived in Chiang Mai for a while. I think it was between 2012-2014 or so and I visited her a few times. Awesome place including the surroundings. I was also there during Songkran. Absolutely crazy Especially if you celebrate in a more local way rather than as a tourist.
Unfortunately no distillery back then. At least I wasn’t aware. All the best with it.
Sawaade krap! Welcome to the community! I was just on Koh Samui visiting the “La Rhumerie De Koh Samui”, they are using sugar cane from the Issan and from Samui.
Do you have a distribution partner in Europe, is it possible to purchase your rum somehow?
One thing I forgot to mention: I haven’t tried that New Yarmouth you had in your glass yet, but there’s one thing you should know—there really aren’t any bad '94 New Yarmouths. And you can take my word for it; I’ve had quite a few of them myself and still have a bottle or two in reserve for a rainy day.
